Despite many of the Grand Old Party’'s best delay, deny and distortion strategies, color-coded fear mongering is failing. Americans want action, not obstruction — recovery, not rhetoric.

Nevertheless, many Republicans and a few disoriented dupes are using the real time tactic of stalling toward disaster hoping to capitalize before and after 2012 on 'I told you so' fiscal failure. As long as hell-bent GOP politicos imagine themselves as conservative crusaders and potential first-responders to our potential economic collapse, they will stall and filibusters the nation's recovery process locally and federally. The permanent campaign of 2012 is already in progress.

However, with increasing citizen urgency and demand for Congressional action, there is the risk of a rolling revolt by fed up citizens seeking overdue relief. Short of showing up on Capitol Hill with barrels of tar and feathers, Americans will see through this 2009 edition of obstructionist politricks. Politically diverse citizen’s will soon flip-the-script on obstruction and begin electorally targeting numerous Congressional culprits for retirement — even in so called 'safe districts.'

Reflavored rhetoric, feigning fiscal restraint, rewriting pre-2009 history, rebranding broken ideas, or colorizing their leadership just won't cut it for average and partisan people who voted for real change. The remaining group of Capitol Hill obstructionists will soon understand there's nothing more pitiful than a scam whose time has past, and the artists who don't realize it.

Democrats, Republicrats, Conservacrats, Independents, and populous patriots of other political persuasions must continue to acknowledge and act on the political paradigm shift that began to grow stronger roots three years ago. Looking back, 2006 was a pivotal year of broad realization that something had gone terribly wrong in our nation, government and souls. Thousands of American lives, domestically and abroad, were lost in the process. That realization translated into millions journeying to the National Mall, city centers, TV sets and online video streams to affirm their new reality on January 20, 2009. We have crossed a sociopolitical tipping point.

From outside the holding pens of Guantanamo all the way to the depressed plains of Iowa, citizens of modest means and humble aspirations had their own 'Awakening' about what they elected in the beginning of the 21st century. As bills, savings and basic survival are discussed at millions of kitchen tables and taverns, this time it's more personal.

Phony partisan bravado, folksy buffoonery, dumb-downed discourse, and articulate juvenile political logic are out. Truth, accountability, competence and transparency have become the watchwords of an awakened American generation. We no longer prefer leadership we can have a beer with as we travel the highway to ruin.

Total sobriety, full engagement, real attention to detail and smart communication will be critical to operating the tools and heavy machinery needed to fully repair eight-plus years of abused and broken government — of the people, by the people and for the people.

The GOP Campaign For 2012:
Stalling The Stimulus Toward Disaster

As President Barack Obama employs the art, skill and conversation of domestic diplomacy on Capitol Hill, average Americans are adhering to his well honed 'keep it real' but hopeful political persuasion.
More than four GOP presidential administrations of deregulation supported by wing-and-prayer economic development have proven to be a drain on America’s financial prowess and long term socioeconomic stability.

Democrats, seeking to get even for years of being under the thumb of conservative Republican dominance, will only prove they have learned nothing about the true responsibility and integrity of power. While Capitol Hill liberals, progressives, moderates, centrists and Independents should not back down like deferential dupes, they do need to stay on task with what we the people commonly elect and pay them to legislate.

Checks and balances firmly in place, representatives of any political persuasion still should not risk being a drag on this citizen-empowered globally popular 44th President of the United States.

President Barack Obama will have more than enough domestic and global nails to hammer without being bogged down in partisan politricks and Congressional power posturing. There’s no time for school yard squabbles or windbag whining in the midst of a collapsing schoolhouse. Millions of jobs, homes, lives and futures can be lost in the blink of a half-decade. We are truly in a national crisis.

Don’t assume in these dire times, average Americans will resort to partisan Democratic or Republican principles and ideologies as a solution to ever increasing economic struggles. Wedge issue economics and politics will have increasingly diminished attraction in the change paradigm of the next twenty-plus years. As history has proven many times, the majority of Americans soon reveal themselves as hardcore pragmatic patriots. If it means enforcing our “Throw the bums out!” clause against diverse obstructionists, then so be it. Collective survival has always been the preamble in America’s social constitution.

Republicans and Democrats alike must closely read and remember the demographic, electoral and constituent e-mails. If we the people have to unnecessarily sacrifice and suffer greater losses, a stronger message to every pretentiously principled partisan politico and wanna-be obstructionist on upcoming election days will read, “you’re fired.”

Congress Must Act Now:
Partisan Politricks vs.
Pragmatic Patriotism

In case there are members of the U.S. Congress that have not received or read the memo, America is definitely in no mood for political stonewalling, the phony rhetoric of resistance or another decade of self-serving special interest governance. It’s time to get seriously focused and busy on saving our nation.

Republicans have no case or credibility if they are trying to reconstitute or rebrand their trickle-down economic theory as a stimulus for genuine fiscal growth and prudent prosperity.

And Now, The Adult Version Of
Presidential Governance & Discourse

Anyone actually listening to President Barack Obama's first State of the Union speech must have been struck by its forcefully frank, yet hopeful tone. Though that was to be proceeded by  the somewhat adolescent cadence
of a cartoonish Republican response, America watched and finally heard what it was like to be spoken to as adults again. More about this point later.

It has been nearly a decade since we witnessed a national leader that was willing to give us a potent dose of strong medicine with an honest prognosis that we can and will get better during our recovery. Recovering the promise of education, generating productive jobs, upgrading health care, invigorating responsible home ownership, and securing our nation while rebuilding its fiscal and public infrastructure will not come easily or quickly.

However, President Obama communicated the complexity of our challenges without condescension or doom. In the parlance of many average Americans, he 'kept it real' while underscoring the hopeful reality of our track record in overcoming similar or greater adversities.

There were things both optimistic and pragmatic for everyone in the President's address. Struggling wage earners in the low to middle income brackets should be even more affirmed that there is someone truly in charge at the White House — someone who actually gets it. Everyone from parents to students, teachers to small businesses, and tech-heads to hard hats can look forward to effective empowerment — as they are all recognized by this president to be the bedrock of our economy.

Finally, the pot holes between 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and Main Street appear to be undergoing competent repair and maintenance by a 24-hour 7-day crew of realistic optimists.

However, it remains clear that some of the 'rising stars' among this president's political opposition are still orbiting in a far distant galaxy. Louisiana's Republican governor, Bobby Jindal, spent his party's valuable time articulating twisted logic about the Katrina disaster and Bush-style government accountability in his GOP response to the President's address. This was the high point of Jindal's revisionist gumbo. The African American historical references early on in Jindal's response (
FULL JINDAL VIDEO) were equally silly, and clearly patronizing.

The remaining rhetoric and rhythm of Mr. Jindal's chat was better suited for a morning children's show than the evening adult conversation we tuned in to hear. The reality of now was nonexistent in the governor's response. You almost expected to hear his talking points punctuated by the salutation of “boys and girls.” This so-called rising star local politico probably caused a pause in the minds of his constituents who deserved logic and clarity in the governor's response, versus what most viewers heard in Mr. Obama's address. The potential path of a one-term governorship for this political novice may have been laid.

In the meantime, for those of us mustering the will to face the challenges before us, President Obama inspires something that we have set aside during this decade of fear and fabrication. Once again, we are reminded that the true source of our recovery and fate resides within us as a people. He affirms it is not about him, it's about us. This source is also fundamentally connected to the government that we enlist, elect and pay to serve us.

Another generation of Americans have been called to boldly face and overcome a challenge. It will now be much easier to do our share knowing there is national leadership willing and able to do its part.

The Curious Case Of Michael Steele

Despite the earnest and sometimes patronizing party hype, it is now abundantly clear who was really elected as leader of the Republican Party. It sure wasn't its duly elected chairman Michael Steele. So much for the GOP's African American 'first.'

Surely, Mr. Steele has a compelling and credible record of representing the best of what's remains of a mostly diminished and chaotic GOP, and  previously as a high profile African American state public official. However, since his recent Maryland lieutenant governorship, it is most incredible and  embarrassing that his ascendancy to the Republican National Committee chairmanship seems to have been reduced to a near Sambotious  stereotype, and a position with no real power.
Even as an avid Independent, and formerly a fifth generation traditional Republican, I am still genuinely embarrassed for yet another Black public official who seems to have been politically punked, or at best bamboozled by buffoonery. Chairman Steele may have provided a potential  balance and formidable brand of integrity in the new American political landscape. His election to the GOP chairmanship also gave hope to some among the electorate that this once credible political party, founded by American slavery abolitionists and principled political change agents (Thaddeus Stevens, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Hiram Revels, et al), would survive decades of wounds inflicted by political parasites canabalizing its apparatus and ideals.

The so called party of Lincoln, idolized by an inspired 44th American president, seems to have initiated a countdown to self-destruction. It is imaginable that even President Barack Obama must find what's happening to his political idol's party very unfortunate.

So, what now becomes of the once Grand Old Party, its pre-parasite legacy, and dubious future. If Michael Stephen Steele truly intends to resurrect and recover the best of what's left in true Republicanism he had better develop and execute a more decisive strategy than just trying to sprinkle the GOP with a little urban attitude, hip-hop 'flava' and forked-tongue rhetoric.

Mr. Steele needs to take full charge for the change he and others say is needed. Short of that, the Republican Party as we know it may implode well before the dreaded 2012. As may now be imminent, this particular disaster won't be a bad thing. The GOP needs change to believe in too.

Beyond voter demographic facts and balance of power factors, chairman Steele must make it absolutely and consistently clear that he and genuine Republicans of integrity are fully in control. Verbally massaging the buttocks of egotistical and politically neurotic talk show hosts is not an effective survival or recruitment strategy. Even their “base” checked-out of true Republican principles over 20 years ago — assuming they knew, understood and practiced them at all.

As long as the face and base of the GOP is that of inbred political hacks, polarizing partisans, socially retarded rabble-rousers, make believe blue bloods, and opportunistic wonks, the party won't survive this century's new American political paradigm — a neo-patriotic populism firmly rooted in a unique American brand of ethnic diversity, intelligent discourse, pragmatic tolerance, multi-partisan cooperation, competent governance, truly transparent accountability, economic reality and global agility.

Condemned signs hang all over the current GOP's ideological closed-club. Even rebranding it back to its radical roots, long before Goldwater or Reagan, may be similar to reviving a corpse.

Republicans won't be the first or last political party to fade away into U.S. and world history. Nevertheless, it is a curious case that new RNC chairman Michael Steele's lack of leadership, brinkmanship and foresight may intentionally or unintentionally accelerate this process. So be it, unfortunately, if it aids in the survival, stability and success of our nation in the midst of a crisis.

Let's cut right to the chase on executive bonuses at taxpayer-funded corporations. Until Federal Marshals from the U.S. Attorney General arrive at corporate offices with shiny steel bracelets and arrest warrants, real responsibility and transparency regarding federal bailout money won't truly be taken as serious.
For the legions of young people considering a business career and in need of role models, another version of "bold action" is needed here and now. This is what it takes to flip and focus the reality of business elites accustomed to unaccountable privilege, unearned contractual bonuses and golden parachutes never granted to laid-off lower level employees and taxpayers.

Rewards are genuinely unwarranted for the same individuals responsible for the abundantly clear incompetence, negligence, greed and elements of fraud resulting in this global tsunami of economic destruction. Despite some evidence for optimism about recent small economic improvements, there are a few more treacherous waves to overcome.

The 'Peter Principle' of rewarding executive incompetence is nauseating and alien to most average American workers. At what point do we acknowledge that most Americans are stuck in the middle of an financial crime scene, where the obvious suspects and probable perpetrators are allowed to police the neighborhood.

Though the legal options for arresting and prosecuting may seem narrow, they are not totally absent. Beyond relying only on public embarrassment and bad corporate press, our Justice Department has a publicly sanctioned responsibility to protect the assets of the public. Our hard earned tax dollars are not some unaccountable magic money earmarked for unearned bonuses, or frivolous and illegal use.

With near unanimous and justifiable public outrage apparent, and increasing, the President and Department of Justice have a wide window of opportunity to give an object lesson in accountability and transparency. Brinkmanship, assertiveness and squeezing the last ounce of justice out of our federal, state and local laws will send a major message to individuals who believe they operate in an unaccountable trade zone outside of American justice.

President Obama has a legally, and morally, defensible opportunity to avoid an erosion of the credibility and integrity in his efforts to recover America. The dramatic pictures of a few public 'perp walks' outside corporate office buildings and executive mansions are worth a thousand words, and most worthy of several billion hard earned taxpayer dollars.

National Recovery, Small Businesses &
The Benefits Of Exponential Economics

Lost between the daily hype and policy statements about spiraling corporate bailouts and unwarranted executive bonuses is the plight of small business development. Economies of scale notwithstanding — and ending the destructive domino effect from failures by so called "too big to fail" corporations — a greater economic opportunity is being missed by not creating, funding and expanding online local entrepreneurship training programs.
Getting down to the local level of our national economy, imagine the exponential economic effect of jobs creation, business-to-business commerce and tax revenue generation by a sustained major increase in funding for training, support, grants and microloan programs for small business start-ups. Imagine the exponenential economies of scale and economic recovery created by a minimum of 2-in-5 unemployed or underemployed people being provided basic management and entrepreneurial skills and modest funding for a new business, and linking it all to the receipt of unemployment and related benefits — a bottom-up approach to fiscal recovery that does not have to replace or be separate from the top-down big business bailout effort.

This is where exponential economics begin to build and sustain steam. Graduates of the program initially may also need to employ others. The variety of viable businesses created will be almost of an unlimited range from product sales or small manufacturing operations, neighborhood stores, home energy efficiency installation crews, visiting nurse care, house call tutoring, same-day pickup and delivery businesses, diverse mobile repair services, community cleanup and renovation firms, or even website construction and cell phone parts recycling.

Exponentially, several revenue streams are created from business growth, income, employee pay, taxes and spending related to both the employer and employee(s). Even in communities where entrepreneurial role models are few or rare, particularly legal ones, future new business operators and sustainable local economy standards are developed.

Again, by the numbers, this modest 2-in-5 concept translates into a substantial 40 percent out of 100. Imagine again, exponentially, multiples of 40 out of 100 people starting a business that employs double or more their number in one small community. Imagine the economy of scale in a city, state or region. Again, think about and beyond the broader revenue streams to reveal the longterm socioeconomic benefits. Think about its effect on our national economy overall.

Imagine, out of a nearly $4 trillion national budget, an accountable minimum of $4 billion were allocated to setup and manage an accredited and password protected online entrepreneurial training program, with business start-up purchase vouchers, and free management guidance services. Similar programs of two, four, six months or more in length are being successfully and effectively operated by various entities including the American Public University System and the USDA for occupational, certificate and academic instruction programs.

Interactive multimedia, video and speedy Internet technology are already being applied to enhance occupational instruction through convenient 24-hour and even live online skills training. Portable PCs and netbooks with WiFi or 3G connections, as well as smartphones, have become the affordable tools for educational and occupational empowerment. The possibilities are here and now. Only economic wisdom and political will from our government are missing.

Both politics and economics are local. With all due respect to President Obama's economic experts, fiscal forecasts, plans and policies, imagine the tipping point from applying one truly accountable and modest bottom-up approach to American economic recovery. More simply, to paraphrase an old Chinese proverb, imagine the accelerated economic growth from a fully accountable federally funded Internet-based entrepreneurial program teaching large numbers of unemployed and underemployed adults how to fish, rather than just handing them one.

Somali Piracy Is Failed State
Terrorism By Another Name

Surely, the unspoken foreign policy of many nations, including previous U.S. presidents, was to be benign or  reactionary about the ongoing horror show in Somalia. As most of the population was put on a path of spiraling starvation and permanent poverty, coastal fishermen watched their entrepreneurial and survival opportunities aggressively consumed by illegal and legal foreign vessels with massive nets and international resources.
A genuinely dysfunctional, and near non-existent, Somali government has become the catalyst for desperate citizens bent on surviving anyway they can. Nearby rogue nations have inserted their political, quasi-religious and military tentacles as well. It's been a recipe for disaster for over two decades. The Bush-Clinton-Bush era of errors in this mess is not worthy of honor either. Respect for international law is now irrelevant in a lawless, corrupt and starving state.

President Barack Obama has shown no clear sign of the direction of his foreign policy on the continent of Africa. Domestic and broader global issues justifiably occupy his attention at this early stage of his first year as POTUS. Even the United States Africa Command, created under the Bush Administration is yet to show its greater purpose.

However, none of Somalia's systemic conditions justify an over-reactive response to organized gangs who use terroristic commando tactics to fund their maritime criminal enterprise. Hostage taking, murder, destruction to international ships and challenging foreign military vessels aren't the reality version of 'Pirates of the Caribbean.' Somali piracy is nothing more than terrorism by another name. The links to terror-prone non-Somali nations will reveal that intelligence.

Nevertheless, pirates and terrorists have never expressed any desire to operate on anyone's timetable. Like outlaws in previous centuries, when they want booty they go and do their duty.

In the short term, it's time to demonstrate the rule of international law and the effectiveness of strategic military action by a small multinational force. Even today, pirates still need a lair. A joint special operations force should find the inland nests, and spray effectively. Arrest those who want to lay down their rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapons, and give them their just day in court — and please, this time, skip the Guantanamo Bay prison scenarios.

Moreover, a clear course of action by Congress involving piracy against U.S. ships is squarely addressed by our Constitution in Article 1 - Section 8: "To define and punish piracies and felonies committed on the high seas, and offenses against the law of nations; To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water."

Thereafter and over the long term, accountable multinational investments in Somalia's human, industrial and economic infrastructure is the greater solution for this long-suffering failed state. Consulting economist Dambisa Moyo, a knowledgeable American University-Harvard-Oxford educated world citizen from Zambia, will enable the formulation of a more effective development plan on and beyond the Horn of Africa. As detailed in her new book, 'Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa,' Somalia is among too many African nations in need of a new development formula to arrest exponential economic deprivation.

Changing the scenario and stereotype of Africa as a collection of broken, permanently poor, disease-ridden, dysfunctional, corrupt and violent nations in need of pity and aid has to end.

As Dr. Moyo explains, effective national development strategies are not alien to Africa. In fact, they are not new to many other nations. Botswana, Liberia, South Africa, Nigeria and even genocide torn Rwanda are African nations on a relatively progressive economic track. In the case of The People's Republic of China, once a totally impoverished nation over a generation ago, it rejected the usual aid model of dutiful western relief organizations and is now able to aggressively invest in and build infrastructure throughout Africa — while holding trillions of dollars in American and European debt as a quasi-communist/capitalist nation. This irony is both surprising and uncomplicated.

The simple point here is this: for the hundreds of Somali fishermen who are now freelancing as terroristic pirates and the thousands more suffering farther inland, it is truly better to show a nation how to fish rather than giving them a few from the tons of overfishing conducted by large foreign fishing businesses of aid-giving nations. Irony and pun intended.

The Other Costs Behind
President Obama's
Numbers & Words

               Alternative Comment & Analysis

                   Catherine Tipton — Guest Commentator

President Barack Obama, in his address to Congress, did what he does best: campaign. He hit the buzz words (responsibility/accountability) but followed each and every one of those sentences with "the government  will send/spend/expand/increase..."
I heard no references to specifics of his plan to bring about his, at best, lofty ambitions. To wit: President  Obama talked about expanding government spending well into the next 20 years, all the while becoming  impassioned about cutting the deficit in half within the next four years.

My first issue with President Obama's lofty ambition is that cutting our now $1 trillion-plus deficit within the  next four years will merely bring the deficit to (say it with me) half a trillion dollars, which is exactly where it  was before all the bail out money and stimulus/recovery money was added to the bill.

Second (and perhaps I should have outlined this as my first issue), the President's (again, at best) lofty  goals are diametrically opposed! I can't wait to hear it explained to me how we are to increase government spending the likes of which cannot even be measured by historical standards and still reduce our deficit? I'm no wiz at economics, but simple math dictates the absurdity of the President's rhetoric.

To be sure, there are certain aspects of the stimulus worthy of investment of taxpayer's dollars. But, much  of what he is proposing is funneled through nothing more than smoke and mirrors and irony. The  President is answering a crisis brought about by over-spending, greed and fraud with more over-spending that will surely create more greed born of the ensuing "where is mine?" attitude, not to mention the fraud that always arises out of government induced and government sanctioned buffet of spending (see: Franklin Raines - Acorn - hedge funds, etc.).

What President Obama proposes is that we rob our children, their children and even their children's  children so that we don't have to suffer the consequences of the collective bad behavior of our  compatriots. And, he's playing on the notion that in our greed, we will accept this future bill on behalf of  those same children because, ultimately, we can't seem to keep from putting our hands out whenever  we're offered something.

A sobering fact that Mr. Obama failed to mention: China holds more than 70% of this nation's debt and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was just in Asia begging them to take on more. What are the repercussions of that, should China ever decide to foreclose?  Someone should hold President Obama's feet to the fire and force him to  answer that question. Global economy or not, we can no longer afford to sell our souls abroad because  we can't seem to stick to a budget and deal with the consequences of our bad behavior.

Take a close look at what is happening to the state of California. Then, take a look at the size and scope  of their social programs, including all the money the state funnels through its welfare system (they  continually have the highest number of welfare recipients on their roles - more than the national average). If it were possible for a state to file bankruptcy, California fits the legal standard. The state is completely  insolvent.

The state (double entendre for emphasis) of California is the grim reality of the future of this country under  President Obama's current economic agenda. We're going down.  I only wonder how many people will  continue to have their hands outstretched to the same people who legislated their demise? Many, I suspect, since even now we won't be forced to learn the lessons we so deservedly earned.

Doing The Jury Pool Hustle With
Dick Cheney & The Conspirators

Engaging the media for interviews and sound bites was never Richard Bruce Cheney's thing. When outside his undisclosed locations, he strategically regaled media dupes with self-serving cryptic quips about Bush Administration policy. Dodging direct questions with factually obtuse answers was standard operating procedure. Only stalwart journalists dared risking the loss of media access for a question gone to far.
However, in the Obama era of apparent transparency and potential prosecutions, the former vice president and others may have to turnoff the talking points teleprompter in their heads in order to get ahead of the news cycle. We will soon approach a tipping point for prosecutions over conspiracy and Constitutional illegalities. Cheney's controlled media outreach will get more creative with rhetoric. Recollections of after action reports won't be so clear.

It is no coincidence that Dick Cheney finds his timely way into the studios of some of the same Bush-friendly news organizations that cushioned his quiet coup over the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and genuinely open government. Cheney's media savvy advisors and lawyers are crafting his future showdown with the Special Counsel of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Nevertheless, when the full unspun facts are fully revealed through Congressional hearings and investigations, hair will raise on the necks of the most average conservative Americans. Liberals, Progressives and traditional Republicans may be astonished at what they didn't know about our slowly developing flirtation with fascism.

The pretexts for random spying on U.S. citizens, warrantless telephone and e-mail surveillance, secret arrests, detainment at undisclosed locations, illegal torture, color-coded fear mongering, premeditated war planning, government regulatory corruption, private contractor cronyism, and the systemic crippling of our national economy were just warm-up acts.

The first draft of recent history already indicates that America was grazed by two bullets aimed at the heart of our democracy and fiscal stability — bullets fired by a narrowly elected enemy within. An enemy we blindly re-elected in 2004.

The politics of distortion, distraction and disinformation from this conspiratorial inner-circle will be in full play in this high stakes game. Juicing-up the potential jury pool in the court of public opinion with doubt is job one. Expect Cheney, Gonzales, Rice, Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and other associated conspirators to put forth their best efforts, strategic media interviews and books to weaken our rediscovered regard for the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

The three aces for U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and the judiciary committees of the Senate and House, indicate there are more than enough willing witnesses, whistleblowers and evidence to weave a credible case for federal convictions. Barring some dubious misfortune or disappearance, these individuals are more than willing to talk with or without immunity — only if they are asked — starting with forcibly retired Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, plus former Bush U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge. The nexus of truly substantive information is usually in unusual places.

For others, the possibility of doing daily hard time in a hardcore federal prison with hardened criminals before and after lockdown is a great motivator for some detailed depositions. Every ounce of tedious investigation and legal prosecution should be used to restore the fading national trust that no one at any level of our government is superior to our Constitution.

Lastly, lest we forget, there is also the bitter irony and taste of the lower ranking soldiers who were locked-up for following ordered and condoned actions at Abu Ghraib prison. Unlike some of their suit wearing superiors, soldiers risking their lives in a military uniform to "be all that you can be" didn't include tortuous treatment of others. Where is their fair share of justice?

Sustaining An Injustice Validates
Those Who Are Truly Responsible

Straight to the basic point, President Obama's decision to not prosecute any Central Intelligence Agency employee was the right call, albeit an intricately tough one. Remember, because  the  buck stops at  the  top,
ultimately it is the officials who authorized, prescribed or tacitly sanctioned the acts who are actually responsible.

Even the most senior CIA officer acts as a subordinate to the dictates of the President and his closest senior officials. When directives, guidance and indirect approvals flow from the office of a Commander-In-Chief, they are tantamount to an official order. That's the reality of Oval Office politics, covert policies, and the politricks of plausible deniability in previous administrations.

This is definitely not a case of excusing agents and soldiers because they were only following orders. Beyond the whipped-up populous hysteria for vengeance by any means necessary just after September 11th, let's acknowledge that our Congress allowed wink-and-nod torture to become unofficial state policy before Bush was re-elected in 2004. Relatively speaking, there were only a few among us who spoke out about the slippery slope we were sliding down until the torture photos and reports appeared.

Whether you factor the details of U.S. and international law, or closely inspect the nuance within Obama's anti-torture policy pronouncements, any non-partisan legal expert can tell you the President left more than a little prosecutorial wiggle room to go after the architects within the Bush Administration. Attorney General Eric Holder, including House and Senate Judiciary officials, never said there absolutely would not be any ongoing investigations, hearings and potential prosecutions of anyone. Holder affirmed to the U.S. Senate, “No one is above the law.”

Moreover, the President never said he would block future investigations or impede prosecutions brought by other nations to an international court. There is still a strong prosecutorial nexus developing beyond the justified public push-back from diverse disgusted Americans and their Congressional representatives. Officials within President George W. Bush's inner circle, engaged in Constitutional corruption and related illegalities, should not exhale sighs of relief.

You can bet the rain in Spain, or in other U.S.-friendly countries, won't delay efforts to litigate on behalf of alleged torture victims. Imagine the foreign policy fallout when an individual or class action lawsuit is brought before a U.S. or international court. Clearly, it would be in the best interest of America's international integrity and growing political capital to not be perceived as any form of barrier to genuine justice. Our values and expressed respect for the rule of law cannot afford to take another hit in the arena of global public opinion. U.S. foreign policy is crippled when it is inconsistent with our democratic principles.

Also, there is the possibility of nearly billions of dollars in settlements to successful litigants, beyond litigation costs. If President Obama has fully factored the numbers and options, the logical conclusion is that justice denied is equal to justice that's financially and politically expensive. Moving forward, as the Obama Administration has repeatedly emphasized in its own particular ethics and values, should also include doing the right thing with an official apology and reasonable monetary settlements to those who are truly innocent victims of our actions. This simple act alone will speak beyond volumes about the integrity of our values of justice.

No doubt, there are actual victims and victimizers. As long as he accepts the existence of both, and completely understands the clear difference between the two, President Obama has a greater chance of healing all of America from its self-inflicted nightmare. Only then will "moving forward" have far less of a drag on our collective moral and political recovery than prolonging a policy of judicial denial.

Change we can truly believe in also means not sustaining injustices and lies, while validating those ultimately responsible for them. Cynicism, mistrust and hopelessness must not become American values.

As We Can Sometimes Say In
New York: WHAT THE F#@K !?

Here's a short-take commentary on common sense. Oh yes, first, we can agree that common sense is not always common. However, in the case of an individual White House official lacking good judgment and foresight or a representative of the President, there is no credible excuse.

It is particularly inexcusable and unsettling when the best explanation is, "Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."

What one Washington official benignly describes as "confusion and disruption," is justifiably for New Yorkers a cause for panic and evacuation. That was the actual and foreseeable result of a bush-league, or perhaps Bush-like, bonehead decision by director Louis Caldera of the White House Military Office.

For all the stress, stimulation and wonder of living in a high-powered international city, and the trauma that low flying airliners can now easily cause, Mr. Caldera should have known better. Despite his experience, it was a rookie move. No one can rightly say what was he thinking, but we can question whether in fact he was thinking — it was one of the President's planes being used as a prop in a city fearful of aircraft that seem to be descending in the wrong place.

If this incident rises to the level of warranting the director's replacement with someone of more sensitive and pragmatic judgment, or at least foresight, that should only be the President's call.

New Yorkers do appreciate the affection for the beauty of our world famous skyline. Yet, using the tools of Photoshop or some other computer generated affects would have rendered even better results. In a tight economy, it would have also been very cost effective considering the expense of aviation fuel, logistics and security in using military aircraft.

The price for requiring police and emergency personnel to handle panicking lower Manhattan office workers evacuating tall buildings for safety would have been eliminated as well.

Nevertheless, as a die-hard and sometimes homesick Harlem 'New Yawka' living and working in the nation's capital, let me concisely convey the staid consensus of most 'Big Apple' residents and officials about this avoidable malapropos "photo-op" — WHAT THE F#@K !?

One U.S. Supreme Justice
Reflects The New America

In the end, the person President Barack Obama selects to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter,  his choice will be made by  a  president with a
nuance and detailed understanding of the Constitution's limits, potential and requirements. In fact, some will say President Obama has a reverence for the spirit and elements of our nation's most important living document.

Whomever is selected, more than ever before, the Supreme Court is in great need of a more holistic judicial mind as its legal rudder. We've had our near century old dance with ideological judicial appointees representing the range of conservatives to liberals, and shades in between.

We've had, and will always have, so called 'activist' judges. Any justice making a decision rooted in their perspective of the law is automatically an activist by the rendering of a decision. There is no credible history of any Supreme Court judge that acted merely as a bench warmer or absolute rubber stamp. At times an appointee's decisions will run counter to the legal and political views of the president that selected them. That is the bedrock definition of genuinely independent justice, and judicial independence.

All things being equal, President Obama has a unique opportunity to choose a judge at one of the most critically important junctures in American history. Our nation has changed, and is still changing. More than ever before, we need a U.S. Supreme Court appointee that reflects these changes while being firmly rooted in the tried and true principles that define us as a people and nation. Moreover, these principles are firm regardless of politics, region, ethnicity or gender.

Admittedly, there are a rare few choices that may fit the bill. Nevertheless, the field can be narrowed to seven key candidate factors: 1) an exceptional standard of qualifications, integrity and recognition by their peers, 2) a record of public involvement beyond their practice and politics, 3) must complement the general face of a changing America, 4) have a record of understanding the international ramifications and relevance of law to American life, 5) bring a judicial independence that is not dependent on principled partisan ethics, 6) a record of genuinely knowing, understanding and enforcing the U.S. Constitution without fear or favor, and 7) bring an added perspective to the High Court that is usually and historically excluded, but undeniably necessary in the true balance of justice.

Again, Obama's candidate list is relatively short. However, in plain sight, there are those who are beyond the usual media speculation, partisan punditry, and public radar. Yet, only one to my assessment can comfortably qualify for the seven pillars of judicial qualities described above. This candidate will also have an easier Congressional confirmation than other Obama choices. Nevertheless, be ready for any obtuse or partisan pre-text by some to oppose or stall his picks.

I'm not President Obama, and don't aspire to be. But, after 56 years, I do recognize where America has been, its current place, and it's general destination. As a result, I am realistically optimistic about the new sociopolitical paradigm and energy re-empowering America.

If I thought like Obama in these challenging and hope filled times, and the seven factors above truly mattered, the choice would logically and confidently come down to only one person. The Honorable Judge Vanessa Ruiz of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Talk Show Political Punkism &
The Chris Matthews Syndrome

Considering myself more of a citizen journalist now, rather than the professional one I performed in previous decades, it's still not so easy to criticize other news scribes when they scribble or rant too far off the page. Freedom of speech, the Constitution, journalistic integrity, and especially responsible news authorship are factors I still take very seriously. Nevertheless, after over a week of much more important news and views, it was still hard to let this one go.

Though I usually avoid him and similar news yackers for far more substantive insights on issues, for the marginal benefit of staying current on the new fad of neo-journalistic ignorance, last week I sat through the latest moronic ethnocentric ego-rant of NBC's Chris Matthews, and his news muse Pat Buchanan. What struck me most about their tirade of covert entitlement and race-baiting on affirmative action was that it was a circular argument rooted in shallow logic, thin facts and interruptive ethnic-laced taunts. Factually informed  hardball dialogue is really not Matthew's game.

In the Information Age of vast and factual information resources, easily fact-checkable on the internet, there is no good excuse for rants based on personal, ethnic or partisan ignorance by any professional news talker.

Hearing his comfortable use of the word "tradition" spoken in the same line of logic with his affirmation of Irish American male entitlement tells me he has no personal experience or truly informed knowledge about America's various military and civilian public services, or too few factual insights compared to his ethnocentric views. Besides having become more of what I view as another loud narrow-minded news hack, rather than a thoughtful genuinely informed journalist that does real research, Matthews is almost an icon of this journalistic genre. He confirmed my sense of his logic, depth and rational thinking — or lack of them. I won't dwell on the forevever fraudulant Buchanan. His putrid punditry and pretentious patriotism has been DOA with facts, history and reality well before the creation of cable TV news.
My own military experience, and that of my father, grandfathers and millions of other American men and women over the last 60 years, clearly shows that when entrance and occupational exams are devoid of covert cultural biases that have nothing to do with the actual aptitude and capability to competently perform (i.e. soldier, pilot, medic, paratrooper, Secret Service agent, Navy SEAL, intelligence agent, police officer, rescuer, et cetera), ethnicity or so-called race factors are no credible barrier to fairly passing any job test. We can all agree that our military, the first responders for national defence and truly horrific combat, is unquestionably far more challenged by danger. Regularly having to qualify, be fit and ready for service in the hundreds of demanding jobs needed in our military's diverse and complex missions is the sole requirement. Unlike many civil service jobs, it isn't a field deeply soaked with inbred ethnic cronyism and bias.

Presidents Lincoln, Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower figured this out generations ago, and acted upon it with incremental improvements and effective Executive Orders to ethnically integrate the U.S. Armed Services. Affirmative action and ethnocentric entitlements were not their issue or litmus test. For these commander-in-chiefs it was really about hardcore troop strength reality, centuries of battlefield proven valor, and general operational readiness.

However, based on Matthews' saliva-spewing punditry and juvenile schoolyard logic, only Irish Catholic White men are socially and intellectually ordained by what he describes as "tradition" to have first dibs over Blacks, Latinos, Native Americans, Eastern Europeans, Asians, Eskimos and immigrants from the dark side of the Moon to occupy firefighter and police jobs. Perhaps, he believes 21st century America is no different than the turn of the 19th century portrayed in the novel and movie 'Ragtime.' Hopefully, the film's romanced racial issues and sliced portrayal of American history are not what's affectionately stuck in his head and rationality since the 1980s.

A real American tradition of 'all hands' means just that — especially with known and unknown perils ahead to challenge all sorts of American first responders during this new century.

If Matthews assumes he is the host and arbiter of what is right and "tradition" in a democratically diverse and increasingly changing America, then MSNBC should rename his show 'Hard Head With Chris Matthews' — in the public interest of full disclosure and accurate program labeling.

Obama Speaks To Muslims
In & Far Beyond This Decade

All things considered, President Obama's speech at Cairo University may go down as one of America's most far reaching and significant foreign policy addresses by an American president. As Islam is statistically one of the fastest growing religions in the developed world, and increasingly so throughout multi-ethnic America, the President most likely has a more strategic and calculated outreach purpose.
With diverse Muslim converts as world leaders, United Nations representatives, world trade officials, global bankers and even ethnically diverse taxpaying voters here in America, the President's words were relevant in the Middle East, globally, and across urban and suburban America. He also effectively checkmated the minority of Islamic extremists and zealots who will increasingly have their bankrupt rhetoric exposed and recruitment hype deflated.

The U.S. policy regarding the Israeli and Palestinian conflict will begin to shift to a much more balanced political and military strategy that's more rooted in America's own broader current and  longterm international interests. While Israel will and must remain a key ally, it will no longer be America's only senior partner in an expanding and more complex U.S. Middle East and global policy mission — though the alliances will sometimes become challenging and contentious.

Due to lessons learned, it is critically important that we require allies to also act as responsible friends. The consequences for America in the new and future geopolitical dynamics are too complex and connected to view through an old lens. Though diplomacy and partnerships will remain vital, in the final analysis it is our own best political, economic and diplomatic interests that are key to sustaining America's geopolitical prowess, prosperity, success and safety.

Under the radar of most U.S. news media and partisan pundits, Obama is restructuring a global framework that is setting the United States on a new globally aware and agile path. This track, barring any major political or economic barriers, will grow American global empowerment in dimensions not foreseen or considered by some of today's major players (i.e. China, Russia, European Union, and India). This president is thinking beyond the next election or news cycles.

The myopic and moronic reportage presented by most network and cable TV news media only scratches the thinnest first layer of Obama foreign policies that are steadily transforming 21st century global politics. It is no coincidence that the President has made overseas travel and dialogue, along with the U.S. economy, a high priority initiative during his first year of office. Peace and economic initiatives are being aligned to produce dividends we're not used to having.

As politics and culture are still local, President Obama seems to have struck a strategic nexus by reaching out to a global religion from the location of its origins and greatest influence.

The Enemy Within: Affirming Newer
Precedents For Domestic Terrorism

Right now, it's assassinating licensed abortion doctors and deterring their patients through terrorism. The next time, avid activists, average citizens or supporters of another legal and federally approved civil right become targets for other homegrown American terrorists.

At this point in time, the U.S. Justice Department must make a critical reassessment of what defines domestic terrorism. In past decades and centuries of our history, mutilating or lynching African Americans and murdering
latter day civil rights activists was a common act tacitly or actively supported by local officials and unofficial entities. The legal right to vote, or legally address discrimination, was no barrier to individuals and covert groups intent on maximizing mass fear and personal deterrence.

There is an obvious historical and legal nexus here for President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. When lawful citizens exercising a federally sanctioned civil right are threatened and murdered, or the facilities designed to secure this right are bombed, there is no clearer definition of terrorism. Terrorism is designed to deter.

Let's say loosely allied groups or individuals in America, driven by their self-defined opposition to a particular U.S. defense policy, were engaged in similar organized or verbally encouraged violent acts against American soldiers or stateside military facilities — at what point do their or surrogates' actions become terrorism, as oppose to engaging in lawful or non-violent acts of civil disobedience, non-hate free speech or organized electoral activism.

Until the price for engaging in or verbally instigating violence and terrorism against a class of citizens becomes much higher than the satisfaction gained from the acts, giving a blind eye or weak response to domestic terrorists will only affirm their activities as a precedent for others and fuel future actions.

Any affirmation for domestic terrorism is also the recipe and definition for homeland insecurity.

No More Politics Or Politricks —
Improve Our Health System Now!

Regardless of the politics and politricks surrounding the inevitable passage of President Obama's healthcare plan, the economic status quo is no longer sustainable.
Let's step outside the box of the predictable rhetoric of delay, distortion, denial and distraction for a few moments. Take an honest and close look at how healthcare and medical factors affect the economics of you as an individual, and then your family. Don't forget to factor-in the ongoing and longterm affects of healthcare on your everyday bills, lifestyle, goals and life choices.

Now multiply these factors in relation to the health and economics of an entire nation. Again, after an honest and clear assessment, it will be hard to deny the effect that a lack of access to truly affordable and effective healthcare can have on an individual, a family, a community, and our country as a whole. The maintenance of our health determines how we live, and die.

Reforming healthcare access and coverage in the United States will be the equivalent of repairing the hub and spokes of a wheel. We as a nation will not roll anywhere near sustainable, fair and genuine economic stability if we don't effectively fix the hub that is our healthcare system. That is the bottom-up bottom line for this generation and 21st century America.

There is no denying that a broken, costly and clearly unfair medical care apparatus has become a destabilizing force on our nation. A perpetually unhealthy and increasingly sick society trapped in a cycle of burdensome costs, poor health choices, complicated access, and special interest boondoggles is not a recipe for improving our failing economy.

The warnings and lessons of these failures are abundant in nations beyond our borders.

Either we decide now to put politics and politricks aside to act on behalf of the greater good of America's health and socioeconomic stability, or finally just acknowledge that we the people are just slabs of slow-rotting meat moving on a conveyor belt of planned obsolescence.

Failing to pass comprehensive healthcare reform in 2009 (or 2010) is no longer an option. Our personal and national insecurity is not a notion. Let your governors and Congress know it.

The President, Race, Police &
The United States Constitution

First, a police report or statements from a defendant are not always a fully accurate or truthful accounting of actual events. There is a long history of both police and defendants embellishing or telling straight-up lies to bolster their version of an incident. More important, in the specific case involving the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr., it is really about whether police (Black, White, Latino or otherwise) have a right to be on private property after verifying no crime was committed and the rightful owner is present — even if the professor was arrested by a Black police officer wearing a dashiki and flashing a NAACP membership card.
The U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights should be a mandatory course from high school to college — especially as many react to Dr. Gates' arrest based on emotion, hearsay, lack of information, misinformation, biased information, or purposeful ignorance rooted in bigotry. The latter seems to dominate much of the discourse on this incident.  So much for our "post-racial" society, or as my grandmother always said: "Some people grow up, and others just grow older."

What is most amazing among the comments about the Gates arrest is how far we've come from not knowing, understanding, recognizing or even wanting to enforce our own civil rights anymore under the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. The issue of race or racial profiling is only a subtext to the main matter of violating a citizen's Fourth Amendment rights — regardless of their ethnicity, racial identity, religion, gender or sexual preference.

For the sake of argument, after no crime and the rightful property owner was confirmed, even if it's likely that Mr. Gates cursed at the officer in six languages with his head spinning, the police had a legal, professional, trained and disciplined obligation to say "Have a nice day," and then leave the premises — without allowing any potential authoritative ego or animus to affect their professionalism. Even under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), our soldiers dodging daily bullets and terrorist bombs in war zones follow the rules of engagement relatively better.

Until fully understanding and enforcing citizen rights becomes clear to most Americans, you can expect more incidents where some taxpayer-funded public servant (police or politician) will knowingly or from poor training press the easy button to violate laws and citizen rights. However, many of us won't realize or acknowledge this even after handcuffs have been slapped on and the jail door closed.

Violation of anyone's Constitutional rights — regardless of race or socioeconomic status — is the paramount issue here, even if the Black Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. was handcuffed and arrested by a Black or Hispanic or Martian American police officer. A beer and handshakes at  a White House occupied by an African American President of the United States does not negate or obscure the requirements and purpose of the U.S. Constitution that applies to every American, including police.

Pressing the easy button to obtain an arrest, and hyping circumstances in a report to establish a police record — which will be forever referenced if Mr. Gates has future police encounters — is not what's prescribed as the core duties of a public servant authorized to serve, protect and respect citizens. Police departments and unions that affirm these aberrant actions only make it difficult, and at times more dangerous, to be truly effective in the communities they serve. Many citizens soon see many or most police as probable suspects rather than public servants. In some communities, the "no snitch" rule didn't come from a natural inclination to not trust the very police most citizens prefer to rely on for their public safety.

If the UCMJ — as related to false arrest, false imprisonment, noncompliance with procedural rules, and false official statements — was applied to civil servant police officers, several policemen in the Gates case would already be held liable and demoted or dismissed from duty.

Does anyone recall when was the first or last time a police union or police chief publicly and fully supported a citizen whose rights were violated by a member? Can anyone remember when the police or local government had to be sued to correct itself? Surely, a real "teachable moment" may be best effective after a civil lawsuit is filed based on the U.S. Constitution.

Apologies, race, egos and three glasses of beer at a White House happy hour aside, this is really about a citizen's rights under the laws of the Constitution — despite the media hype and slant of this incident to pump-up emotions and generate ratings to prolong the news cycle.

ADDENDUM:
Until the issue of violating a citizen’s Fourth Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution is addressed, truly resolving this issue won’t happen — even if the Black Dr. Gates was illegally arrested by a Black police officer carrying a NAACP membership card. Lesser known Americans of every ethnicity and socioeconomic status are violated daily by public servants sworn to serve, protect and respect the citizens (and citizen rights) that pay their salaries.

Mrs. Lucia Whalen, who clearly did the right thing by making the 9-1-1 cell phone call for an elderly resident — yet, still had her words and efforts twisted in officer James Crowley's bogus "official" police report — actually deserves the happy hour drink at the White House.

Racial profiling is only a subtext to the bigger issue of abuse of power by any rogue officer. The "teachable moment" will only come when a violating officer is held fully accountable legally and administratively by the laws that protect every American — especially since it is highly unlikely that police unions or most police chiefs will effectively reprimand or remove officers who make it more difficult or dangerous for others to police the communities they serve.

Again, if an applicable and fully enforced version of the Uniform Code of Military Justice — as it relates to false arrest, false imprisonment, noncompliance with procedural rules, and false official statements — was applied to civil servant police officers, several policemen in the Gates case would already be effectively held liable and demoted or dismissed from duty. An officer's status in a union would and should have no bearing on its fair and legally justified application. Since it's effective and good enough for our soldiers, then police departments — a civilian paramilitary organization — should be fully enjoined in its uniform use to protect law abiding citizens, defendants, as well as law abiding police officers.

In the meantime, the honorable Henry Louis Gates Jr. can give a truly "teachable moment" by enforcing the Bill of Rights (as we should all know and always do) that too many Americans have struggled and even died to uphold — by filing a civil lawsuit for false arrest.

Federal Authorities Must Act Against
Threats & Incitements Toward Violence

Once again, the time has come. If we ignore the overt and subtle rhetoric familiar to another place and time in America, then we will again further sow the seeds of domestic political violence. Political terrorism is a tool — beyond shouted words, graphic posters and bloody effigies — setting up the logical next step in this trend.

Even the latest organized mobs at town hall meetings calling to “lynch” Congressional officials, democratically elected Representatives daring to solicit civil constituent discourse on healthcare reform, are a sign of potentially more violent intentions to come if left unchecked.

These incidents have gone beyond the Constitutionally protected freedoms of speech and expression. In fact, they are gradually being corrupted and erased to suit organized groups who could care less about genuine democratic expression. The line of fervent and vigorous responsible speech that doesn't incite and invite injury or death to anyone has been crossed by these purposeful intimidating mobs, and the few broadcast buffoons that create or nurture them.

It's just a matter of time before their organized activities reach a critical mass. The synergy won't be patriotic or pretty. In the interest of responsible free speech, the U.S. Attorney General, the FBI, Federal Communications Commission, and other related federal agencies must take investigative and punitive action now. We've seen this picture and mob action scenario before by groups that feel they have the only and final word on what's best for every other American.

It's just a matter of time when this ticking alarm clock goes off soon in the worst way. From Civil Rights era domestic terrorism to federal building bombings by homegrown terrorists — and now threats, insinuations of harm, or intimidation of public officials and citizens at town halls — it is time to act against those entities that diminish and deny all of us, regardless of perspectives, the true freedoms guaranteed to every American.

How ironic it might be that the enemies beyond our shores may find potent satisfaction because the mobs and self-serving media morons inside our borders are more effectively destabilizing America from within.

already, the GOP has played their true hand of delay, distract, distort and deny until they have effectively diminished the Democratic majority's efforts. It is page 1 out of their two-page political playbook of politricks. Page 2: Blame any failures of consensus or progress on the Democrats. It is time to end this wandering waltz of appeasement. Move on Mr. President, and lead.

Is providing choice in healthcare really that hard? How about empowering us with the ability to have an A-B-C healthcare menu that can satisfy everyone — satisfying Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Blue Dog Democrats, Red Herring Republicans, the fearful misinformed, and even a few purposely uninformed town hall ranters.

Simply, column A allows the large private health insurance operations to continue offering their best competitive version of comprehensive coverage. In column B is a co-op plan that allows citizens to pay for healthcare by combining smaller private insurers* (*based on a cap at a specific level of annual net corporate revenues) and local government operated health services with a diverse list of federally funded government care. Column C, my favorite, will enable citizens of any socioeconomic group or financial means access to wholly government operated healthcare — like the kind us taxpayers finance for members of Congress and their families.

No doubt, in column C is the inherent conundrum of taxpayer-funded Congressional officials trying to explain and justify why the rest of us should not have healthcare access as good as theirs. Column C's option — modeled on the best practices and qualities of healthcare already provided through the highly rated Veterans Administration healthcare program, Medicaid, Medicare, private insurers and healthcare for Congress — must have mandated full federal funding. Absolutely-positively no partisan politics or politricks must be attached to this funding.

Oh yes, regarding full federal funding, let's drop the idea of a disproportionate tax on anyone for healthcare. That's a smelly red herring, whether we earn $250,000-plus or not, that few of us want to envision in an economy that won't totally improve for awhile. It is also one major bone of distraction removed from the mouths of anti-reformers who rant over the cost of reform, at the expense of the real issue of creating a truly healthier nation. A simple flat tax across all incomes, perhaps at 11-percent regardless of annual income, would be seen as a good investment by anyone needing effective and full healthcare coverage for every American.

The A-B-C healthcare option allows large and small private insurers, as well as locally funded government plans to compete as they always have, while effectively muting any dominance by a massive federal healthcare bureaucracy. Again, Americans will have the option to choose a plan from any column, or even combine parts from each option based on what's in their wallet.

The only mandate that should apply to all options is that every insurer must provide a highly publicized and robust preventative healthcare program to motivate more personal responsibility. There should also be a government operated website that provides full and clear information for citizens to compare, bundle, update and apply for the A-B-C health plan that fits their needs.

Additionally, President Obama is correct on the need for a fully-secure and totally private medical records database to enable only doctors and other licensed healthcare givers to be on the same page when caring for anyone at anytime in any state. Tamper-proof single-user photo ID healthcare cards will complete the process, enabling the insured to present one piece of identification — regardless of the chosen plan — showing their current coverage status. Status must be renewed annually as another security layer to eliminate fraud by unauthorized access.

After 97 years, since Republican President Theodore Roosevelt sought national healthcare legislation in 1912 — yes, on some things, we're kind of slow in America — Americans should have healthcare coverage that complements the standard of living that enabled us to lead the world. However, if the economics of this albatross are not fixed very soon, our standard of living and quality of health will proportionately diminish to a level near some underdeveloped nations.

Edward Moore Kennedy: Centurion Of Democracy
Official White House Photos by Pete Souza
Despite Senator Edward Kennedy's passing, President Barack Obama's earliest and most preeminent political ally, we should expect to see a greatly empowered Chief Executive in the months and years to come. It's much like in the loss of a parent or mentor, you feel an unexpected refinement and empowerment beyond your own strengths from the passing of a symbolic torch.

Surely, with this latest struggle to pass U.S. healthcare legislation by a 44th President, it will and should rightly be renamed in honor of its greatest and longest proponent. Imagine, all it took for one man to see his life's mission was less than one year of hospitalization among the same citizens he would grow to serve on healthcare and numerous other issues that affected their lives.

Though he will be more popularly called the "Lion  of  the Senate,” for my  generation  that
Few people manage to be a formidable adversary and ally to some of the same people that respect them as both. Senator Edward Moore Kennedy almost effortlessly exacted that nexus in nearly half a century as the United States Senator from Massachusetts.

Even as the youngest and last brother in a long dynasty of political figures, he managed to operate on another level of politics that eluded most politicos including his brothers. Perhaps it was the little known spiritual connection and personal introspection he had, and its motivation to effectively serve the very people his faith and conscience commanded. Yet, he never displayed it as a public ideology behind his personal commitment to people of every religious reverence and social status. He found a sweet spot in human nature through political science and its art.

No doubt, his own personal challenges grounded and connected him to the common man. Who among us can sanctimoniously throw stones compared to our own missteps in life. At least, as we can recall, he was the rare public figure who would own-up to his mistakes without excuse, arrogance or pretentious rhetoric. That alone, compared to most, makes him stand outside the norm of what we expect and get from our politicians today.
observed, supported and was greatly impacted by his senatorial accomplishments, he will be better understood and justifiably known simply as a centurion of democracy.

Senator Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy lives on — in eternal peace, integrity and genuine honor.

this young 44th President's first year — "Breaking news! Barack Obama is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!"

"Okay!" I say — "and rapper Kanye West publicly humbles himself, agrees he actually was the "jackass" the first Black President rightly called him, and donates millions to humility research."

President Barack Obama may not be everyone's usual image of what the leader of the 'free world' should look, speak and think like. This is apparent in the rantings from neo-conservative miscreants, Sambotious partisan politicos, lip service liberals and town hall anarchists — all of whom have been long disconnected from the centrist values revered by a growing diversity of young and older Americans.

Obama has kept many of his salivating supporters and rabid enemies off-kilter simply because they just don't genuinely and fully get him, or the paradigm he has set in motion. But, nor do I completely get him or some of his political and personal motivations — such as wasting time appeasing the gaggle of GOP neurotics stuck in the 'permanent campaign' zone, or the beer summit between the indignant lawful scholar and Constitutionally rogue cop. Nevertheless, I do recognize real change coming from a political paradigm shift when my mind and eyes see it.

In less than 11 months since his Inauguration, I've witnessed a constructive change in how we think of ourselves as Americans in an increasingly globalized and interdependent world. More important, besides the multi-ethnic sideshow of homegrown bigots and isolationists, there has been a marked change in how we think and act one-on-one as Americans. The essential essence of the “e pluribus unum” effect seems to be setting in to the great dismay of numerous 'divide and conquer' operatives. This most American effect alone is worth my one valuable Independent vote on Election Day 2008 for this curiously charismatic messenger of change.

Considering the myopic memory and attention span of too many Americans after the last 10-to-20 years, the true meaning of this newest U.S. President won't kick-in until the third year of his Presidency. There is a brainy yet bare knuckle subtlety in both his global strategies and Capitol Hill brinkmanship that somehow motivates constructive action steps by zombie-like officials, as well as his personal clarity and role modeling for fatherless and hopeless young males. It's slowly becoming apparent to most. Obama has presented legitimate credentials in both arenas.

It is said that we should be careful of what we ask for — because we may get it. Like the Nobel, this President is potentially the prize most of us didn't expect to get — and many will continue to struggle understanding after nearly a decade of dumbing-down our basic ability to be rational, reasonable and respectful citizens. In the meantime, I for one will continue to relish these times of challenge and change for Americans — and for America within the global community.

If I still remember correctly after 56 years, these conditions were what always took us to the next level of our best selves as both citizens of the world, and of the United States of America — and I'm all good with that.

Mr. President, Please! Stop Engaging
Telebuffoons & Partisan Neurotics
Anyone thinking they get real news from Fox and certain other cable news networks are only fooling themselves into longterm ignorance. Some of America's many national and local outlets attempt to give what they call news, but in the end most of their reportage is simply a televised blog of narrow opinions, punditry, infotainment and distraction from actual information that matters — news you can really use.
So called news networks like Fox seek and get validation when public officials speak to them, or engage their usual partisan neuroticism regarding what constitutes true news. Just like many music artists have discovered they don't need a record company to produce, promote and sell anymore, cable TV has been made effectively irrelevant by the Internet — plus its still untapped potential to communicate genuine depth, context and insight about real news, views and issues.

This president must remember, he owes much of his election success to recognizing that cable news outlets — and 'mainscream media' in general — are no longer a critical medium or the best communications tool for reaching millions of news consumers seeking substantive information and verifiable facts. The handwriting has been on our screens for almost a decade.

The Duh Decade is about to end. Why would ANY American President need to spend their valuable media time affirming, confirming or validating that Fox News is in fact the sideshow dumpster of news outlets? WHY? President Obama (and any of his staff) only lowers the stature and integrity of the Presidency by validating these telebuffoons in criticizing them. Like all schoolyard loudmouths and bullies, they thrive only by drawing attention to themselves by any means necessary — usually for the purpose of a higher audience share to scam advertisers.

More than ever before, we need this president's undivided attention on the real challenges that matter. He needs to stop engaging buffoons, morons and partisan neurotics seeking a ratings boost or personal validation. Page one of their objective is to distract, delay and diminish any substantive discourse and plans that unite us on such urgent matters as economic recovery, functional healthcare, global competitiveness, terrorism security, et cetera. They don't have a competent plan beyond this one page out of their two-page playbook — page two involves ranting socially retarded rhetoric and blaming others for not doing it their way, one more time.

Effectively resolving critical U.S. challenges isn't their goal — only gaining a political advantage for the next election cycle. As proven before — the best way to win this game is not to play it. Like my Dad advised in similar situations, "Weeds can't grow without sunlight and water."

Hopefully, Mr. President, someone will get you right square to the root of this reality very soon — so that our entire country may grow even further toward our very best solutions and potentials as Americans — as in "We the people of the United States" of America.

Wanted: An Object Lesson
In Genuine Accountability

The Irony & Dirty Secret Of
U.S. Military PTSD Funding
The Parallax Perspective
Independent Bottom-Up Opinionalysis
Dennis Moore - POTUS World Publisher
How ironic that the actual caregiver, an Army major and psychiatrist specializing in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is the most unlikely perpetrator of violence against active duty U.S. soldiers. Moreover, there is also another irony in that no record of Dr. Nidal Malik Hasan having ever been in military combat or served in a combat zone exists.

Beyond all that may be investigated and discovered about this murderous tragedy on a stateside military base, the U.S. Department of Defense's inability to get ahead of the curve on the PTSDs of returning soldiers is a bad sign of other problems to come. As more of our men and women are deployed, stretched, returned and redeployed for major combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other beyond the headline war zones, there needs to be a more proactive and fully competent addressing of the numerous mental health issues of returning U.S. warriors, and their families.

In actuality, war is absolutely nothing like any high definition movie or video game. There's never a pause or reverse button for the actual bullets, bombs and bloodletting that are a daily unrelenting reality in real warfare. Despite the impression of TV crime dramas and local crime news reports, no amount of stateside street violence can match one minute of close quarter military combat on any scale.

Increased federal and state funding, and much larger staffs of well trained regularly screened psychiatric personnel, must become an additional military priority to remedy the current and coming soldiers with any level of PTSD. For my tax dollars, a minimum of 5 fully certified and regularly reviewed PTSD specialists for every 200 soldiers would be a welcomed ratio in psychiatric counseling personnel.

This or any war is not, and never was, just over there. It is also being fought right here in the homes, neighborhoods and nearby bases of many returning soldiers. Haven't we fully learned the lessons from Vietnam's U.S. veterans? No doubt, then as is now, there will never be any dishonor in having faced down and survived the horrific violence of war. The only dishonor is not having regular easy access to effective pre- and post-combat counseling and testing.

We demand so much of our soldiers, especially those near or beyond the breaking point. As General Colin Powell once put it, "You break it, you own it." The time is way past due that we all take full-time ownership and care of our military men and women, plus their uniquely challenged families that carry burdens many Americans would never take on.

We owe them, big time — and all the time!

The Lincoln Syndrome:
Dry Run To Assassination
Let's be clear from the beginning. These are not quaint, idyllic or innocent times for any United States President, be it Barack Obama or any other. Establishing and enforcing an effective security zone around the Commander-In-Chief in wartime, and any other time, must never-ever be some standard operating protection procedure. Anything close to a perfunctory security mindset regarding this President's safety equally puts our nation at risk and in trauma as well.
However, when it is even remotely possible for two reality show aspirants to conspire, perjure and pimp their way into being face-to-face with a POTUS, the Vice President and Chief of Staff at a supposedly secure state dinner, we have a real problem with Presidential security. Then add the factor that the head-of-state being honored, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has his own assassination threat issues and is in the same room with a sitting U.S. president.

Anyone directly or indirectly responsible for the President of the United States' security should be consistently and comprehensively conscious of not doing anything that may provide any path or setup to a target-rich environment or weak link for a professional assassin, terrorist operative, or even potential autograph and publicity seeking nutcases with lethal ballpoint pens.

Let's not cut corners or stand on sympathetic politeness, the President's Social Secretary and the specific on-scene Secret Service personnel directly responsible for this major security lapse should be permanently reassigned or fired if the facts support this action. Even if Desirée Rogers is a Chicago 'homey' and a major FOO (friend of Obama), friend or not, First Lady Obama must never-ever be put in the position of explaining to Sasha, Malia and our nation why America no longer has this father and President because of a simple screw-up by subordinates.

I also very much cherish, love and like all of my friends too. Nevertheless, if they caused an unequivocal f-up of clear and present danger to my family's security, it is a certifiable justification for a boot out the door after an imagined one in their ass. The so-called celebrity and clout that goes with being the first African American woman in this most important  position of Social  Secretary is far subordinate, if

not totally irrelevant, to basic security matters of the Presidency. Frankly, the Presidency of the United States — especially the historic significance of the first Black POTUS — does not, should not and must never operate on 'Colored People' time or the 'good enough' principle.

As for the U.S. Secret Service, they have forthrightly owned-up to their responsibility in this matter. No doubt, from this point on they will be refining their procedures, tactics and strategies in an effort to more effectively avoid what I describe as the Lincoln Syndrome — a most regrettable scenario where small and basic lapses in security led to the murder of one of our most revered and reviled presidents during a highly controversial and pivotal time in our history.

Relatively speaking, times have not changed. This time in American history is surely no less pivotal, critical, and dangerous. With veiled, obvious and incited threats against President Obama mounting at an all time high, the usual security procedures don't  and won't suffice.
